Witte Museum, San Antonio

Witte Museum is a San Antonio cultural institution that was very much founded by an entire community. In the early 1900s, San Antonio lacked major cultural attractions, and as such, various community members began discussing the founding of a museum for all San Antonians to enjoy. With the help of the city and a sizable donation from local businessman Alfred G. Witte, the Witte Museum San Antonio opened in 1926. Since then, it has been one of the most popular attractions in town.

The Witte Museum is a relatively eclectic museum. Also commonly referred to as the San Antonio Dinosaur Museum, this family-friendly cultural center generally focuses on the culture, science, and overall history of the region. One of the exhibits at the Witte Museum San Antonio focuses on dinosaurs. Here, visitors can see fossils, as well as the chance to control large animatronic dinosaurs and dig for fossils like a paleontologist. As you can imagine, the San Antonio Dinosaur Museum is a huge hit with kids.

While exploring the Witte Museum San Antonio, visitors can admire various works of art, learn about animals that call Texas home, and check out an impressive collection of textiles and decorative arts. A fascinating mummy exhibit that relates to ancient Egypt is also on offer, and various historic structures that have been moved to the museum yard offer interesting insight into early building practices. The hands-on activities that can be enjoyed at the adjacent H-E-B Treehouse Science Center cater to all ages, which only helps to make the Witte such an excellent museum for families.

There is a lot to take in at the Witte Museum. As such, visitors should plan on spending at least a couple of hours there. Save for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and the third Monday in October, the museum is open daily. Between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, admission is free! The Witte Museum is located to the near north of downtown and next to Brackenridge Park. Other attractions in the immediate area include the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, San Antonio Zoo, and Fort Sam Houston.
